Why I Call Southwest Virginia Home

There are many reasons why I love southwest Virginia. I have lived here for over 22 years and have raised my two kids here. There is a feeling of pride when I tell someone I live at Smith Mountain Lake. The peaceful beauty of the mountains surrounding the lake is simply breathtaking. We have four true seasons with Fall being my favorite. The leaves on the trees are glorious and spectacular! The air is crisp and cool, the lake is much quieter, and I love to take walks with my dog, Jenny. Our favorite spot, the Smith Mountain Lake Community Park is one of the most scenic spots at the lake. It is open from dusk to dawn and has several trails along the shoreline with gorgeous views of the Roanoke River. Bring a fishing pole for fishing off the partially covered dock and when hungry, there are many great places for a picnic. This park is also a great place for biking, kayaking, and swimming at the seasonal sandy beach.

Even though the lake is bordered by 3 counties, it still feels like a small town. There is plenty of southern hospitality everywhere and the locals always make you feel welcome and right at home. It’s a slower pace and safe place to live. There is very little crime and people look out for each other. Highway 122 links Franklin to Bedford County and there are many shops, boat rentals and restaurants. I love taking my family to Bridgewater Plaza. We listen to live music at Mango’s, shop at the small shops, have a bite at Moosie's or a delicious pastry at the coffee shop. Sometimes, we will play a round of mini golf and it’s always fun to feed the enormous carp!

It has been very exciting to see the development here at the lake over the years. The growth has been welcomed, adding more conveniences to lake life and still very little traffic. There is a little something for everyone, young or old. I still enjoy Saturday morning thrift shopping, visiting the local wineries and catching a movie at Westlake. There are so many beautiful neighborhoods all along Smith Mountain, on and off water and southwest Virginia. I am indeed very fortunate to live here!
